Five questions to ask before deciding whether or not to repair or replace an appliance.

Making a decision between two expenses isn’t easy and when it comes to broken appliances, the decision of repairing or replacing it seems to become so much harder. When deciding whether to repair or replace an appliance, consider these 5 Questions:

1. Is it truly broken? Make sure to double check it’s plugged in, the circuit breakers haven’t tripped and the vents/filters aren’t clogged.

2. Is it under warranty? Check the owner’s manual or records to see if the warranty is up, if it’s not, contact the manufacturer or place of purchase.

3. Is it at the end of its lifespan? Most appliances have a lifespan of 6-15 years. Do some research to see how long the appliance should last. If it still has some years left, the best bet would be to just repair it.

4. Does the 50% Rule apply? If the appliance is more than 50% of its lifespan or the cost to repair is 50% of the cost of a new one, then it’s time to replace it.

5. What are the energy savings? Sometimes purchasing a new appliance can save hundreds in energy costs, but other times it’s cheaper to just get it repaired. Do your homework and figure out what would be best.

If your appliance is broken and you’ve gone through the 5 Questions and still can’t decide what to do, call Michatech Appliance Repair to have an expert give you advice on what to do.
